The reality is clear: AI adoption in UK associations and membership bodies is being held back by a leadership knowledge gap.
AI presents an unprecedented opportunity for our sector to enhance member value and operational efficiency. Yet the AI Institute.cloud's comprehensive research reveals a concerning trend: while 78.8% of UK membership associations are experimenting with AI tools, only 15.2% have partially adopted AI, and none report full integration – and leadership education is a significant factor.
The AI Institute's mission is to foster the successful adoption of AI technologies within associations and membership bodies.
The Education Barrier
The 2025 research findings are compelling:
72.7% of associations cite a lack of AI knowledge among leadership as a major capability gap
60.6% identify "lack of knowledge and know-how" as the single biggest obstacle that, if removed, would accelerate AI adoption
62.2% report the absence of a clear AI strategy as their primary challenge
This knowledge deficit isn't just slowing adoption – it's limiting the potential benefits of AI across our sector.
Chart shows the participating executives in the 2025 reserach report published.

The Impact of Leadership Readiness
The report clearly demonstrates the link between leadership readiness and AI adoption:
Only 6.1% of associations report "Very high" leadership readiness where "AI adoption is actively supported by leadership and embraced by staff"
33.3% report "High" leadership readiness where "Leadership is supportive, with some staff buy-in"
The majority (48.5%) have only "Moderate" readiness with "Some support from leadership and mixed staff buy-in"
The research’s supplementary report adds that "Associations with highly ready leadership show a greater likelihood of progressing beyond the experimentation phase in AI adoption."
The connection is clear: educated, supportive leaders drive successful AI transformation.
Moving Beyond Experimentation.
To progress beyond basic experimentation, leadership teams need targeted education focusing on:
Strategic clarity: Understanding how AI aligns with organisational goals
Use case identification: Recognising where AI creates the most value
Implementation approaches: Learning how to move from experimentation to integration
Importantly, the 2025 researched report shows that associations with AI as "a core part of our long-term strategy" (9.1%) demonstrate much higher confidence in implementation, while those with "no specific AI initiatives/projects planned" (39.4%) struggle to move forward.
